About Chopta Chandrashila

Chopta is a small region of meadows and evergreen forest area which is a part of kedarnath wildlife sanctuary located in Uttarakhand state, India and a base for trekking to Tungnath, third temple of Panch Kedar, which lies 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) away. Located at a distance of 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) from Tungnath is Chandrashila, a rising to over 4,000 metres (13,000 ft).

Chopta is an unspoiled natural destination lying in the lap of the Uttarakhand Himalayas and offers views of the imposing Himalayan range including Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. It is located at an elevation of 2,680 metres (8,790 ft) above sea level. Chopta village is surrounded by forests of pine, deodar and rhododendron and is rich in flora and fauna include rare species of birds and musk deer.

Activities in Chopta Chandrashila

Trekking : The trek route to Chandrashila commences at Chopta and involves easy to medium grade trekking. The enthralling treks take some through enchanting meadows, hushed hamlets, and conifers and oak forests. In winter, the trekking route is covered in snow.

Camping : Being situated enroute to Tungnath, Chopta is an ideal place to camp and enjoy the beauty of nature. Camping is an amazing experience to have with family and friends when you are surrounded in the lap of nature.

Photography : Chopta offers mesmerizing view of the undulating valleys and one cannot resist capturing the majestic snow covered peak with their camera. The 360 degree panorama one witnesses form the Chandrashila summit is one of the reasons to make Chandrashila one of the best spot to capture snow capped mountains.

The Chopta - Tungnath - Chandrashila trek is a famous destinations for trekkers. The Chopta region has many treks and trails cutting through jungles and grasslands. Chandrashilla, Tunganath and Devariyatal are the best known trekking routes in the Chopta region. Because of an abundance of birds, Chopta is becoming popular among birdwatchers.

The trail is a bit tricky with its abrupt climbs and sudden changes in the terrain. You can also choose to be guests at the dhabas on the trail for a delightful spread. Besides the amazing nature trapped along the route; it's possible to have a glimpse of some amazing peaks like Kedar along with Chaukhamba.

After a kilometre long trek you can reach the summit of Chandrashila which is at approximately 4000 meter. You can have a view of various spiritual temples along the way with many animals and birds adding on to the beauty of that pious place.

The trek is just of four days, so you can plan the trip with your family as well as with friends for the trek and add loads of fun to adventure. The freezing weather, cool breeze and spiritual tunes will make you forget all your worries and you can spend a good time in the lap of nature.

Brief Itinerary

Day 1 : Drive Haridwar-Sari.

Day 2 : Trek to Deoriatal.

Day 3 : Deoriatal to Rohini Bugyal.

Day 4 : Rohini Bugyal to Chopta.

Day 5 : Trek Chopta-Tungnath ,Chandrashilla Top and back to Chopta.

Day 6 : Chopta to Haridwar.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 : Drive Haridwar-Sari.

Once you reach haridwar, over coordinators are waiting for you to take next step. On the way to sari from Haridwar you can cherish Rishikesh and Devpryag enroute, if you have the time. Your drive to the trek destination will take around seven to eight hours including a comfortably timed break for breakfast and lunch. Overnight stay in sari Guest House/Camping.

Day 2 : Trek to Deoriatal.

After having breakfast, the amazing trek will begin and will be around 3kms long. You can have a small sightseeing tour around the campsite if you wish. Once you start your trek, you can see the reflection of amazing surroundings in the crystal clear lake. Therefore it is often called as ‘two worlds at one place’. Your trek to Deoriatal will be lined by the holy rivers Ganga and Alaknanda.

Day 3 : Deoriatal to Rohini Bugyal.

After having breakfast and start the trek to Rohini Bugyal. While walking along the ascending trails you can feel the fragrance of mixed forests which include oak trees and pine as well. The snowy surrounding will let the clock go round easily. The snow filled hills will make you forget every worry and you experience serenity in the snowy white surroundings.

Day 4 : Rohini Bugyal to Chopta.

Next day will start trek to Chopta , we will walk up and down along the trail and cross forest of different varieties of forests like Oaks, Maple, Rhododendrons . Once you reach Chopta you can take rest for some time and get re-energised after a refreshing cup of tea and snacks. You may also explore a bit of Chopta landscapes.

Day 5 : Trek Chopta-Tungnath ,Chandrashilla Top and back to Chopta.

After having morning breakfast you can proceed with your trek towards Tungnath. After enjoying the beautiful scenery at Chopta and spending cozy time in the lapse of landscapes, Tungnath will offer you some spirituality and peace. This hike will lead you to the holy temple named as Tungnath temple. Enjoy one of the most breathtaking and beautiful vistas in the Kedar, Chaukhamba and other peaks in the vicinity. Though in this area, you may also get to see a few rare species of eagles. You can also see the amazing forests around the temple and also the peak of Bandarpoonch as well. On both the sides of Chopta you can see green slopes and feel the cool breeze. You can have a tea break while trekking and rest on the bulky stone shaped dining tables in between the path while returning to Chopta. Back at Chopta basecamp, you can relax completely as trekking comes to an end.

Day 6 : Chopta to Haridwar.

On day six, after breakfast all you’ve to do is drive to Haridwar. You will reach Haridwar by evening.

Transport options from Delhi to Dehradun

  Delhi to Dehradun by Car -

Hire a cab from Delhi to Dehradun, which takes around 4 hours. NH-72A from Chhutmalpur to Dehradun is the best route you may take. The cost of cab ranges from INR 9 to INR 97 per kilometre, depending upon the type of car. Ideal for families and groups.

  Delhi to Dehradun by Bus -

Take a direct bus from Delhi to Dehradun, which takes around 6 hours. Deluxe, Volvo, semi-deluxe and ordinary Uttarakhand State buses depart every hour from ISBT, Kashmere Gate in New Delhi. There is also an overnight deluxe A/C service run by Uttarakhand Tourism. Dehradun ISBT bus stand is located about 5 km from the centre of the city. Ideal for backpackers and single travellers.

Take a direct Jan Shatabdi train from Delhi NDLS station to Dehradun railway station that takes around 6 hours. Dehradun railway station is located in the city centre. Train is the most comfortable and cost effective mode to travel to Dehradun from Delhi. Ideal for groups and families.
